Dr. Lorraine Cummings is an OBGYN with Susquehanna OB/GYN & Nurse Midwifery of Advantia and is currently accepting new patients at locations in Bel Air and Havre de Grace, MD. After over 20 years of field experience, Dr. Cummings transitioned into teaching Ob-Gyn residents in York, PA. Though this experience was rewarding, she has recently returned to patient care, knowing that it would fulfill her desire to improve women’s health directly, by working one on one with local women about the resources available to them.

What led you to becoming an OBGYN?

I became an OBGYN because my mother introduced me to the book, Our Bodies, Ourselves [by the Boston Women’s Health Book Collective], which we shared together to learn about what was happening to our bodies during our menstrual cycles. It was fascinating to me and I became the source of information for my friends for all the questions they had about their menstrual cycles. Learning and educating about women’s health has always been my passion. So naturally, when I decided to become a physician, I always knew that I would specialize in OBGYN.

Do you have a special interest in women’s health?

My special interest as an OBGYN is educating about the health benefits of hormonal contraceptives. There are so many low-dose options now—pills, rings, patches, implants—that all have the power to prevent ovarian and uterine cancer in addition to their ability to give women control of their reproductive choices. It is one of my goals to counter misinformation about hormones by highlighting their life-saving benefits.

Who is your biggest influence?

My mother has had the biggest influence in my life because she taught me the importance of never giving up on your goals. In her senior year of high school, she was awarded a scholarship to college, but she withdrew after one year because she became engaged to my father. In those days, it was understood that women—once they were married—had to focus on their families, not their careers. Four children came in quick succession, and I’m the only daughter.

So, I think my mother wanted to pass on her life lessons to me. By the time I started school, I remember that my mother would be doing her own homework alongside my brothers and me. She started taking college courses again throughout my childhood which was an inspiration to me. She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology but then pursued a master’s degree in accounting and eventually she became a computer programmer. She taught me that women are capable of accomplishing so much. Women need to be role models for each other because supporting and strengthening women supports and strengthens entire families.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

If I were a superhero, I would love to have the power to create a universal language that everyone in the world could understand. Talking with each other is the only way to solve problems. If we all could communicate more easily, we could come up with so many more creative solutions. Again, I am Dr. Lorraine Cummings at Susquehanna OB/GYN & Nurse Midwiffrey, and I am accepting new patients. I look forward to meeting you.
